And then my heart with pleasure fills, and dances with the daffodils

Valentine’s Day is now less than a week away and while I don’t care much about cards and chocolates, I do care a lot about flowers. I really think we should buy flowers more often - like they do in Eastern Europe. If you’ve ever been to the winding streets of Prague, Budapest, Tallinn or Riga, you know what I’m talking about. Those long stalls of flowers everywhere, full of roses, lilies, carnations, chrysantemums, daffodils, tulips, daisies, snowdrops and even orchids. People buy them for birthdays, for dinner parties, for their partners, friends, grandparents… just about for every occasion. Even just for the fun of it. And if there’s one habit we should adopt in this country, it’s definitely that of giving each other flowers.

I love flowers. They are so delicate and yet they have such vitality about them. For me there’s no better gift than a bunch of flowers. And this year’s V-Day is even more special because by buying flowers we get to support the local gardens, greenhouses and flower shops, provided we buy some home-grown stuff. So it’s two for the price of one - you get some flowers and get to show some patriotism. Oh yeah, AND declare your love to that sweetheart of your’s.
